Back to field notes

Measure engineering progress with evidence, not theatre.

A long task board can look active while the risky outcome remains unknown. The better question is what became true this week.

Original perspective · editorial review required before production publication

01

Use observable milestones

A milestone should describe an outcome someone can review: a working journey, a tested integration, a release-ready migration or a decision made with evidence. “Seventy per cent complete” is usually less informative than what a user can now do.

02

Expose uncertainty early

Strong reporting includes the risks and decisions that could change the path. A visible uncertainty can be investigated, sequenced or escalated. An invisible one becomes an unwelcome surprise after time and budget are already committed.

03

Keep the record useful

Share concise demonstrations, decisions and next steps at a regular cadence. The goal is not status performance; it is giving the customer enough context to make timely choices without having to manage every engineering detail.
