Back to field notes

A field workflow is not a smaller desktop workflow.

Mobile systems work in interrupted, physical and often offline environments. Designing for that reality changes what quality means.

01

Design around the moment of work

A person in the field may be moving, using one hand, dealing with poor light or speaking to a customer. The important question is not whether a desktop form fits on a smaller screen. It is whether the next action is obvious, safe and recoverable in that moment.

02

Treat connectivity as variable

Weak or missing connectivity is an operating condition, not an edge case. Preserve input locally, show what is pending and make reconciliation visible after a connection returns. A reassuring animation is not proof that an important record reached the server.

03

Make state understandable

People need to know what has been saved, what still needs attention and what cannot proceed. Clear status, durable drafts and focused error recovery reduce repeated work. Test on realistic devices and networks before treating the flow as finished.
