Before automating a workflow, make it legible.

Automation magnifies a process. If the process is unclear, the software can make confusion travel faster.

01

Follow the work, not the org chart

Trace the actual journey from a request to an outcome. Include spreadsheets, messages, handoffs and exceptions, not only the stated policy. The places where people repeatedly copy, wait or ask for clarification usually reveal the most useful improvement.

02

Define one source of truth

A system does not need to replace every tool to make progress. It does need clear ownership for critical records and an explicit rule for synchronisation. Without that, automation may produce duplicate, stale or conflicting decisions.

03

Automate a stable decision

Begin with a repeatable, observable step and make its exception path visible. Measure whether the new workflow reduces delay or error without moving effort elsewhere. Then extend from what the operating team can understand and control.
