Back to field notes

Good automation knows when to ask a person.

The useful question is not how many steps an agent can perform. It is which actions it can perform safely, and how the workflow recovers when it cannot.

Original perspective · editorial review required before production publication

01

Separate interpretation from authority

A model can interpret a request, extract a proposed structure or draft a response. That does not mean it should approve a refund, change a permission or make a commitment to a customer. Keep the proposed action separate from the authorised action.

02

Place review where consequences increase

Review belongs at meaningful decision boundaries. A draft summary may need a light check; a payment or consequential customer message needs stronger control. Show the reviewer the source, the proposal and the uncertainty, then record the decision.

03

Design the failure path first

A provider may be unavailable, a document may be unreadable or the answer may lack evidence. Preserve the request, ask for missing context, route to a person or return a useful deterministic result. Do not turn a timeout into silent data loss.
